Traditional Chinese color is built on contrast that the eye can rest in. Mineral and plant dyes produced a familiar set: indigo, madder red, cinnabar, ink black, celadon green, ochre, and the undyed warmth of silk and hemp. They were rarely used as a single isolated fashion shade. Architecture, painting, and dress put them in pairs — a deep ground and a brighter figure, or two muted hues of similar depth.
The combinations that feel easiest are the ones with a clear hierarchy. Ink black with the color of raw silk. Indigo with undyed cloth. A cinnabar or madder red used as a border rather than as the whole robe. Celadon set against a warm brown. Gold, when it appears, is a thin line on a dark ground, not a second equal color. The contrast is strong enough to see and limited enough to live with.
The plates below translate those pairs into modern swatches. Wear them the same way: one color as the field, the other as the edge. A full outfit in two shouting opposites misses the tradition. The tradition is a deep, steady ground, and a second color that clarifies it.

Across regions, the color pairs that last tend to share a structure. A deep ground, a lighter or brighter second, and a rule about which one is larger. In Chinese dress the ground was often indigo, ink, or brown, and the second color arrived as a collar, a lining, or a border. In European tailoring the same idea shows up as navy with cream, or black with camel. The cultures differ. The proportion does not.

The plates below are those pairs drawn as modern swatches. Read each one as a garment plus an edge, not as two equal blocks. Wear the larger field in the dress, the coat, or the trouser. Wear the second color where a border would have been: the collar, the shoe, a cuff. Two shouting opposites in equal amounts miss the point. A steady ground, clarified by a second color, is the combination the eye can live with.
