A color clash is a pair of hues that sit far apart on the color wheel, worn in amounts large enough to notice. The classic pairs are the complements: red with green, blue with orange, yellow with violet. In clothing, the familiar versions are slightly tamed — navy with red, camel with black, chocolate with sky blue, pink with red, emerald with fuchsia.
The clash works when the two colors are similar in intensity and unequal in area. Two fully saturated colors, each covering half the body, fight. One color in a large, calm area, and the other as a smaller or sharper piece, reads as intentional. Navy head to toe with a red shoe is a clash. A red dress with a green dress is just two dresses.
Start with a pair you already know, such as black and camel or navy and cream, and only then move to a louder complement. Keep the rest of the outfit out of the argument: one metal, one texture that is shared, no third bright color.
