Once a palette has been chosen, it has to become clothes. An extreme palette, especially one that includes black, fails when every piece is extreme. A black shoe, a black bag, a black collar, and a saturated dress worn together cancel the contrast they were meant to create. Contrast needs a quiet area next to a loud one.

Give black a job. Use it as the line: the shoe, the belt, the neckline, the frame of a jacket. Let the larger surfaces carry the color you were drawn to, at a size that can be seen from across a room. If the plate you chose is pale but edged in black, keep the black thin. If the plate is mostly black, keep one light or saturated piece large enough to read as the point of the outfit.

The same rule works in reverse for a soft palette. Do not add a hard black accent out of habit. Use charcoal, brown, or navy for the line, and keep the values close. The trait you noticed in the first part is a preference for a kind of contrast. Dress to that preference, and leave the rest of the spectrum for another day.
