Dress length is a proportion, not a trend. Where the hem stops changes the apparent length of the leg, the balance of the torso, and how formal the dress feels. The six lengths below are the ones pattern cutters actually use.

A mini ends high on the thigh. A short dress finishes a little lower, still above the knee, and is the easier of the two for daytime. Knee length meets the knee or sits just under it; it reads as neat and works with both a flat and a heel. Mid-calf, sometimes called midi, ends on the widest part of the lower leg, so the shoe needs a little presence or the proportion can look unfinished. Ankle length clears the floor and shows the ankle bone. Full length touches or breaks slightly on the shoe and belongs to evening, ceremonies, and heavier fabrics.

If a length feels wrong, change the shoe or the waist before you change the size. A higher waist makes a midi feel longer in the leg. A pointed or barely-there heel does the same. The hem should be decided while you are standing in the shoe you will actually wear.

2. Short Dress

Hem length is an old tailor’s decision. A mini ends high on the thigh. Knee length meets the kneecap. Midi, or mid-calf, stops on the widest part of the lower leg, which is why it needs a shoe with some presence. Maxi clears or brushes the floor. Each length changes how long the leg looks, more than the size of the dress does.

Choose the length in the shoe you will wear, standing, not sitting in bare feet. A higher waist can rescue a midi. A heavy fabric wants a longer hem so it hangs instead of flaring. The six lengths in the plates are the ones pattern cutters still use. Pick one and alter it, rather than buying the same dress three times.
