Gift of Extremes – Are You the Ultimate Talent? (Part 1)

People do not choose colors at random. Given a wall of combinations, the eye stops on a narrow band: the highest contrast, the greyest neutrals, or the most saturated hue in the room. That reflex is useful. It tells you which kind of palette you will actually wear, rather than which one you admire in a picture.

Extreme colors sit at the edge of the range. Pure black, pure white, and a fully saturated red, blue, or yellow carry no grey in them. A palette that includes black is a high-contrast palette. It wants clear edges, a graphic shape, and one strong break between light and dark. A palette with no black, built from dusty or diluted tones, wants the opposite: close values, soft joins, fewer sharp lines.

Part one is only the selection. Look through the plates and notice which one you return to. Do not talk yourself into a softer set if you keep stopping on black. The wardrobe that follows from that choice — how much black, where it sits, what it is paired with — is the subject of the second part.

Extreme color is color with the grey taken out: a pure black, a pure white, a fully saturated red or blue. The eye goes to it first in a wall of options, which is useful information. If you keep returning to the plate with black in it, your wardrobe wants contrast. If you return to the dusty plate, it wants colors that sit close together.

Do not correct the instinct to seem more reasonable. A person who loves a hard black edge will look uncertain in a set of muted pastels, and the reverse is also true. This part is only the choice. The next part is how much of that extreme color to actually wear.
