Autumn is short, and a new outfit for every week of it is unnecessary. One strong piece — a coat, a knit, a trouser, or a skirt in a good cloth — can anchor several combinations if the other clothes are neutral and already fit.

Keep the hero piece constant and change what sits next to it. A camel coat over a black knit and black trousers is one day. The same coat over a white shirt and a brown skirt is another. A rust knit with grey flannel is a third, and that knit under a jacket, with the coat left off, is a fourth. Four outfits, two or three extra garments, no new category of clothing.

When you do buy, buy for repetition. A classic cut, a fiber that holds its shape, and a color already in your coats and shoes will be worn more than a novelty piece that only matches itself. Material and fit matter more than a seasonal logo. If the piece cannot be worn with what you own, it is a second wardrobe, not a solution.

One strong piece can anchor a month if the clothes around it are neutral and already fit. A camel coat over black, then over cream, then left off so a rust knit can lead, is three outfits and almost no new clothing. The hero stays. The neighbors change.

When you add a piece, add it for repetition. A classic cut, a fiber that holds its shape, and a color already in your shoes will be worn more than a novelty that only matches itself. If it cannot be worn with the coat you have, it is a second wardrobe. Autumn is short. The piece you repeat is the one that was worth buying.
